On Saturday night at The Dow Event Center in Saginaw, the Colts geared up to play the Saginaw Spirit. Both teams were feeding off of road game victories on Friday night.
The first period did not start out as planned for the Colts as they found themselves down by two goals after the first twenty minutes. Jimmy Lodge and Garret Ross each scored, giving Saginaw the two goal edge. The Colts outshot the Spirit 10 – 8 but goaltender Jake Paterson shut the door for Saginaw.
The second frame saw former Barrie Colt Eric Locke increase the Spirit lead with a power play goal at 6:57. Just a few minutes later Saginaw would yet again add another marker on a Dalton Young shot that beat Alex Fotinos over the glove to give the Spirit a 4 – 0 lead. A goaltending change for Barrie seemed to spark the Colts as they would finally solve Jake Paterson. A 3-on-1 saw Tyson Fawcett finish off a nice passing play from teammates Jake Dotchin and Andreas Athanasiou. With 1:48 remaining in the second period, Mark Scheifele broke into Saginaw’s zone before ripping a shot past netminder Jake Paterson to cut the deficit to 4 – 2. The goal was unassisted. After forty minutes the Barrie Colts were ahead 26 – 14 on the shot clock.
The third period was a chippy affair between both clubs as Barrie tried to claw their way back into the game. Late in the frame, Mark Scheifele made a drop pass to Anthony Camara who riffled home a nice wrist shot to bring the Colts within one. Alex Lepkowski was also credited with an assist.
It was too little too late for Barrie though as the Saginaw Spirit would add an empty to defeat the Colts 5 – 3. Despite out shooting the Spirit 40 – 26 the Colts could not muster up another come from behind victory. Barrie will need to quickly forget the loss as they have a chance to redeem themselves Sunday afternoon when they visit the Sarnia Sting. Puck drop is 2:00.
