The Barrie Colts and Mississauga Steelheads wrapped up their sixth and final meeting of the regular season at the Hershey Centre. The Colts won the game by a final score of 2 – 0 and with that victory, they also clinched first place in the Central Division.
The first period was highlighted by strong goaltending by Colts netminder, Mathias Niederberger. The Steelheads outshot the Colts 20 – 7 in the first period and Niederberger stopped them all to keep the Steelheads scoreless.
Late in the frame, Colts forward, Andreas Athanasiou had a breakaway chance after receiving a long stretch pass from Mark Scheifele but unfortunately, he shot the puck off the crossbar and the game remand scoreless after one period of play.
In the opening minutes of the second period, Colts forward, Tyson Fawcett scored to give the Colts a 1 – 0 lead. Teammate Mark Scheifele skated into the Steelheads zone and took a shot that was blocked by the Steelheads defenceman, but Fawcett immediately picked up the puck and he quickly snapped it past Steelheads goaltender, Tyson Teichmann.
The Colts heavily outshot the Steelheads in the second period, as the shot margin was 15 – 1 in favour of Barrie. However, the goal by Fawcett was the only one of the period as the Colts led 1 – 0 after forty minutes.
Barrie played a strong defensive game the rest of the way, as they did not allow the Steelheads to get many quality scoring opportunities. Colts forward, Anthony Camara would tack on an empty net goal in the final minute of the third period to make the score 2 – 0 and seal the win. Mathias Niederberger played outstanding in goal as he stopped all 36 shots he faced to preserve his fourth shutout of the season.
The Barrie Colts will be back in action when they return home to the Barrie Molson Centre on March 7th to take on the Sudbury Wolves. Puck drop is 7:30. Click here for tickets.
